A Retrospective of Enchantment: Taylor Swift's legacy and the dawn of 'The Life of a Showgirl' on October 2025
Dear Enchanted Ones,
From the 27th of July to the 8th of September 2024, the magnificent halls of the V&A Museum in South Kensington, London, transformed into an enchanting celebration of music, storytelling, and sartorial splendour with the Taylor Swift Songbook Trail.
The Academy of the Enchanted Arts is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
The Taylor Swift Songbook Trail was a spellbinding journey through her music career, unveiled at the V&A to coincide with her London Eras Tour shows; a luminous chapter in her ever-evolving legacy.
Spanning multiple galleries, the trail wove together costumes, artefacts, and immersive designs that echoed each album’s themes with breathtaking detail.
Masterfully crafted by Tom Piper, celebrated for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Tower of London’s poppy display, and the V&A’s Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser, the installations transformed the museum into an enchanted celebration of storytelling and artistry.
I visited on opening day and returned again and again, each time uncovering new wonders, not only in Swift’s artistry, but in the V&A’s hidden corners brought to life in ways only this museum could conjure.
From the quiet comfort of the Folklore cardigan to the shimmering glamour of 1989, every piece carried echoes of her storytelling genius, binding us to her music in a shared enchantment.
This post also explores The Invisible String: that unseen thread running through Taylor Swift’s work, connecting artist and audience, past and present, in a delicate dance of belonging.
And now, with the newly announced The Life of a Showgirl on the horizon, it stands as both a tribute to past magic and an invitation to dream forward into what is yet to come.
Taylor Swift’s artistry is a living spell. One that as it the focus of my enchanted mission here….sings us back to life. So, dear enchanted one, are you ready for it? If so, let us begin our own digital journey through this mesmerising trail.
The Victoria & Albert Museum in London’s South Kensington, long a sanctuary for storytelling through art and design, was a perfect home for the Taylor Swift Songbook Trail.
The V&A’s timeless mission to celebrate creativity and narrative found new breath in Taylor’s music and eras, weaving her songs into the very fabric of its historic halls.
This enchanting dialogue between Swift’s artistry and the museum’s treasures invited fans to explore hidden corners of the V&A, discovering beauty and meaning in unexpected places.
And thus, The Songbook Trail became more than an exhibition; it was a living tapestry of stories across time, drawing a luminous invisible string between past and present, artist and audience.
In this sacred space, Taylor’s gift for enchanting storytelling blossomed alongside the museum’s legacy, reminding us all how creativity, whether through song, design, or history, sings the human spirit back to life. The very definition of enchantment that I uncovered in my podcast ‘To Be Enchanted: What Does It Mean To Be Enchanted?’
As I stepped into the V&A Museum, transformed by the Taylor Swift Songbook Trail, it felt as though each gallery had become a chapter in her remarkable journey.
The air was alive with the melodies of her greatest works, echoing softly through the halls and creating an atmosphere that was as immersive as it was poetic.
The V&A, with its world-renowned collections of art, design, and performance, was the perfect home for this trail.
Taylor Swift’s music – an intricate tapestry weaving threads of personal narrative, cultural observation, and whimsical artistry – found a physical manifestation within these hallowed walls.
The museum amplified her storytelling by pairing each of her eras with an area of the V&A that echoed its essence.
At the heart of this trail were 13 stops – an intentional nod to Swift’s lucky number – each representing an era of her career.
“The significance of the number 13 on my hand … I paint this on my hand before every show because 13 is my lucky number; for a lot of reasons,” she said. “It’s really weird.”
Swift continued, “I was born on the 13th. I turned 13 on Friday the 13th. My first album went gold in 13 weeks. My first No. 1 song had a 13-second intro. Every time I’ve won an award I’ve been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter.” (Source)
Invisible string-like lighting wove over the glass cases, symbolising the connections between her albums, costumes, and creative evolution.
The intimate attention to detail reflected the collaboration between the V&A and a selection of dedicated Swifties, whose insights imbued the trail with authenticity and heart.
The journey begins amid a vivid tapestry of defiance and reinvention.
Taylor’s transformative Versace suit from The Man music video commands the space, a tailored vision of power, cheekily adorned with a wig and beard, embodying a “playboy millionaire” persona that dares to expose the harsh double standards faced by women in the spotlight.
Around her stand Venus, goddess of love and creative allure, and Diana, goddess of independence and strength, their statues casting a timeless glow that links Taylor’s bold statement to a long lineage of feminine resilience.
Nearby, her director’s chair and MTV VMA for Best Direction sit as quiet yet potent symbols of her creative command.
This opening scene sings of empowerment, a fearless reclamation of voice and agency, perfectly entwined with the V&A’s sacred celebration of storytelling and symbolism.
At this stage of our journey, we step into the shadows of transformation and fierce defiance.
The striking ensemble Taylor wore on her first stadium tour captures a time when she boldly embraced darkness, turning public chaos into a canvas of reclamation.
Reputation was her “goth-punk moment of female rage,” a powerful anthem against a world that sought to rewrite her story.
The iconic snake motif, embodied in the Gucci and Christian Louboutin boots, transcends mere aesthetic; it becomes a mythic symbol of transformation, wisdom, and renewal.
Like the serpent shedding its skin, Taylor emerges renewed and unyielding, proclaiming her truth through adversity.
This ensemble stands where Antonio Canova’s Three Graces once graced the hall. goddesses of beauty, charm, and creativity, now contrasted with Taylor’s defiant reinvention. Here, vulnerability evolves into power, and the tale of growth and resilience is written anew.
At this enchanting pause, we step into a Music Room that feels plucked from the heart of Georgian grace with creamy walls and rococo gold whispering tales of music’s place in courtly life. Soft light bathes the space, a perfect echo of the Speak Now era’s quiet elegance. This was one of my absolute favourites and I spent the longest time here!
Here rests the lavender tulle dress by Reem Acra, paired with delicate ballet slippers and the ukulele Taylor played on her World Tour; a trio that sings of vulnerability and tender self-reflection.
This room cradles the essence of Speak Now: a celebration of youthful honesty, where every lyric is a whispered confession and every note a step toward brave truth-telling.
The ethereal hues and gentle textures invite us to linger in a moment suspended between innocence and awakening and a graceful ode to enchantment wrapped in timeless beauty.
As we cross the threshold into this sumptuous chamber awash in deep crimson, the ancient language of red unfolds before us; a hue steeped in passion, power, love, and danger.
This is the beating heart of the Red era, where Taylor Swift’s sound blossoms into daring new realms, blending electrifying pop-rock with tender echoes of her country roots.
Draped within this space is the exquisite Tadashi Shoji gown from I Bet You Think About Me; its flowing fabric a symbol of grandeur and bold reinvention.
Nearby, the humble fisherman’s cap, reimagined on the Red (Taylor’s Version) cover, whispers of nostalgic charm reborn anew.
Together, these treasures narrate a dance between past and present, a fearless embrace of transformation.
Here, red pulses as both wound and victory, raw, vivid, and unforgettable, a radiant testament to Taylor’s creative courage and the indelible power of the heart.
As we wander through the V&A’s Taylor Swift Songbook Trail, Stop 5 invites us into a realm where Shakespearean romance entwines with modern storytelling.
Before us stands the Love Story dress, worn by Taylor Swift on her Fearless Tour, cradled within the awe-inspiring Raphael Gallery.
Your eyes are drawn upward to the 16th-century cantoria, an ornate singing gallery crafted by Baccio d’Agnolo, where once sacred choirs lifted their voices in ethereal song.
This elevated perch becomes a metaphorical stage for Juliet’s longing, inviting us into a world where fairytale romance breathes anew.
The period-inspired gown, with its flowing textures and delicate grace, blends seamlessly with the gallery’s grandeur, capturing the heart of Swift’s art: a shimmering bridge between history and the present.
Venture upstairs to the Ironwork Gallery, and the dress reveals a more intimate side where it is bathed in a rich, red glow that seems to shimmer from the invisible string weaving magic throughout the trail.
Surrounded by half-open books, this hidden alcove becomes a sanctuary where love’s timeless stories unfold, whispering the enchanting promise of romance and possibility.
At Stop 6 of the Taylor Swift Songbook Trail, we are swept into the electrifying pulse of 1989, where Swift’s metamorphosis into a pop icon bursts into vivid life.
Two dazzling stage costumes, one a sleek black and purple creation by Jessica Jones, the other a radiant sequined catsuit by Zuhair Murad, gleam with the bold spirit of the 1980s.
Paired with the iconic Stuart Weitzman boots, they embody the shimmering glamour and daring energy of 1989’s synth-pop sound, fashioning a radiant new chapter in Swift’s story.
Set against the grandeur of the Raphael Gallery, these costumes emerge from large gilt frames that echo the ornate Renaissance tapestry cartoons surrounding them.
This stunning juxtaposition of contemporary sparkle and classical artistry creates a dialogue across time, just as Raphael’s works captured powerful narratives, so do these costumes tell a tale of reinvention and fearless self-expression.
Here, the past and present entwine, reminding us how art continuously shapes and reshapes our cultural soul.
The Taylor Swift self-titled era stop is a tender celebration of origins, where the shimmer of youthful ambition dances with the grandeur of history.
At the heart of this display stands Taylor’s debut look: a turquoise BCBG Max Azria dress paired with custom Liberty cowboy boots and her Taylor Koa guitar; a radiant declaration of artistic freedom and the raw spirit of adolescence.
At just sixteen, Swift’s fusion of country and pop echoed through her music, capturing the vulnerability and hope of youth.
The richly embroidered boots, bursting with colour and symbolism, honour her roots while heralding her bold ascent. In addition, her name, etched lovingly on the guitar’s fretboard, is a quiet emblem of identity and self-expression.
Beside this modern icon rests an 18th-century French gown, its delicate embroidery a testament to aristocratic refinement and social stature: a symbol of fashion as power.
Yet, despite the gulf of centuries, both garments whisper the same truth: that clothing is a vessel for identity, whether worn on the stages of Nashville or in the halls of Versailles.
At Stop 8 of the Taylor Swift Songbook Trail, we enter the realm of two sister albums that shimmer with quiet enchantment: evermore and folklore. Born in the shadowed uncertainty of 2020, these albums are gentle beacons and narrative tapestries that have woven their way into the hearts of many, including mine (to be honest, they made me a devoted Swiftie!)
Nestled within the serene Edwin and Susan Davies Paintings Galleries, the setting is a soulful conversation between Swift’s ethereal storytelling and the Victorian masterpieces that surround her.
The centrepiece is the creamy lace Zimmermann dress from the willow music video, tenderly encased within a vitrine evoking the wooden cage of the video itself. The mannequin, with its visible puppet strings and articulated arms, embodies the song’s delicate dance of vulnerability and surrender—an exquisite metaphor for the fine line between control and release.
Around it, storyboards offer whispers from behind the scenes, illuminating Swift’s evolving creative spirit. Nearby, Victorian paintings such as Francis Danby’s Disappointed Love and Rossetti’s The Day Dream echo the melancholic beauty and introspective yearning woven throughout these albums.
This stop feels like stepping into a dream; where music and visual art entwine to reflect the fragile poetry of the human heart.
In isolation my imagination has run wild and this album is the result, a collection of songs and stories that flowed like a stream of consciousness. Picking up a pen was my way of escaping into fantasy, history, and memory. I’ve told these stories to the best of my ability with all the love, wonder, and whimsy they deserve (source).
At Stop 9, the trail invites us into the contemplative world of folklore, brought to life through a tender installation dedicated to the iconic Cardigan.
Resting gently on a stool beside a moss-covered piano, the cardigan recreates the music video’s poignant final scene where its worn fabric is a symbol of warmth, safety, and the quiet solace found in returning home.
In this imagery, the cardigan becomes a metaphor for reclaiming peace after emotional storms, a garment woven with the threads of resilience and comfort.
Set within the Edwin and Susan Davies Galleries, the installation is cradled by the luminous British landscapes of J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. Here, Turner’s atmospheric light and shifting skies mirror the emotional tides of transformation, while Constable’s serene pastoral scenes root us in the enduring calm of nature’s embrace.
Together, these artworks and the cardigan create a dialogue between music, memory, and the timeless sanctuary found in both art and home.
What was once a simple knit has grown into a cherished emblem of Swiftie culture: intimate, universal, and deeply entwined with Taylor’s storytelling heart.
This stop whispers of belonging, longing, and the tender refuge that stories, whether sung or painted, can offer us all.
At Stop 10, we enter the glimmering, nocturnal realm of Midnights.
Described by Taylor as “a journey through terrors and sweet dreams,” this album marries emotional introspection with daring sonic experimentation: an intoxicating blend of synth-pop, electronic, and R&B influences born from sleepless nights.
Midnights resonates deeply with Swifties, becoming a beloved era of raw vulnerability and radiant empowerment.
The display’s heart is two dazzling costumes that capture the album’s ethereal yet bold spirit. First, a resplendent yellow gown by Euro Co., shining in all its fairytale whimsy from the Bejeweled music video, where Taylor playfully reclaims her story, choosing self-empowerment over Prince Charming. The gown, paired with a glittering necklace, glows with opulence and charm, echoing the video’s star-studded narrative magic.
Behind a half-drawn curtain waits another icon: the sparkling Oscar de la Renta gown paired with crystal-studded Louboutin shoes, worn during Taylor’s Midnights announcement at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards; an emblem of brilliance, confidence, and new beginnings.
Here, in this twilight gallery, Midnights shines as a testament to Taylor’s enduring gift: to turn darkness and dreams alike into pure, bejewelled artistry.
This moment marked not only the arrival of a groundbreaking album but also unveiled Taylor Swift’s mastery in weaving fashion and music into a singular, shimmering narrative.
The installation celebrates Midnights’ monumental triumphs, shattering streaming records, reigning as the bestselling album of 2022, and securing Taylor her fourth Album of the Year Grammy.
It also honours her prolific creativity during this era, highlighted by four self-directed music videos, each a constellation of hidden clues and secret Easter eggs that deepen the enchanting lore for devoted fans.
Stop 11, the “Re-recordings” chapter of the Taylor Swift Songbook Trail, unveils a monumental and fiercely personal chapter in Taylor’s journey: a radiant celebration of her quest to reclaim artistic sovereignty through the empowering “Taylor’s Version” re-recordings.
This gallery gracefully intertwines past and present, weaving together costumes, treasured memorabilia, and immersive interactive elements that invite visitors to step inside a story of resilience, creative evolution, and unwavering self-ownership.
Here, the echoes of history meet the bold defiance of today, crafting a testament to the power of reclaiming one’s narrative and the enduring magic that comes with it.
At the heart of this display shines the striking shirt dress, crafted by Joseph Cassell and Jessica Jones, adorned boldly with the titles of Taylor Swift’s first six albums.
Worn during her triumphant moment as Artist of the Decade at the 2019 American Music Awards, this ensemble whispered a quiet prophecy and a subtle yet potent herald of her future mission to reclaim and reimagine her musical legacy.
This shirt-dress stands as a radiant emblem of Swift’s unwavering resolve and visionary courage, a sartorial ode to the power of foresight and the art of reclaiming one’s own story.
Swift’s evocative double album, The Tortured Poets Department (released in 2024), holds its own sacred space within the trail, illuminating the ongoing evolution of her artistry alongside her powerful journey of reclaiming the past.
Here, a prologue poem from the album, tenderly handwritten lyrics, and exquisitely book-bound vinyl jackets offer a glimpse into her deepening literary and artistic soul. Visitors are invited to lose themselves in a bespoke soundscape, masterfully crafted by Gareth Fry, which envelops them in the album’s hauntingly beautiful lyrical brilliance.
A carefully woven timeline of magazine covers traces Taylor Swift’s meteoric rise, from her debut on the Rolling Stone cover in 2009 to the distinguished Time Person of the Year commemorations in 2023.
This visual chronicle, framed like a gallery of cultural milestones, is accompanied by a haunting soundscape of camera shutters; a delicate yet insistent echo of the relentless media gaze that has both shadowed and celebrated her luminous journey.
The gallery’s final act unfolds with a radiant celebration of the Eras Tour, an awe-inspiring spectacle that embodies the grandeur, resilience, and ever-evolving legacy of Taylor Swift’s artistic journey.
Amidst this crescendo, the humble friendship bracelets emerge as tender tokens of devotion. Born from the heartfelt lyrics of “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” these woven charms capture the spirit of creative fellowship and the profound bond shared between Taylor and her devoted Swifties: a shimmering thread of unity and love.
Hats, too, take their place as emblematic milestones, each telling stories of moments etched in memory, from the iconic headwear worn on stage to the cherished tradition of gifting a signed fedora during the jubilant performance of “22,” these hats become symbols of ritual, celebration, and shared magic.
At the heart of this display stands the enchanting baby blue Oscar de la Renta gown Taylor Swift wore to the Eras Tour film premiere on 11th October 2023.
Adorned with delicate floral appliqué, it captures the ethereal elegance central to Swift’s style. This gown embodies the fusion of fashion and storytelling that defines the Eras Tour: now the highest-grossing concert film ever.
A vivid symbol of her cultural legacy, it reflects Taylor’s journey of empowerment, innovation, and artistic brilliance.
Stop 12, The Tortured Poets Department, unfolds in the majestic Sculpture Hall of the V&A, where towering marble sculptures provide a powerful, dramatic setting for Taylor Swift’s current artistic journey.
At the centre stands the Victorian gothic-inspired ensemble from the Fortnight music video; its austere, leather silhouette blending historic form with futuristic edge, embodying the tension of the tortured artist caught between tradition and reinvention.
Suspended above, delicate sheets of paper flutter like whispers of inspiration, while a nearby typewriter grounds the scene in the tactile reality of creative labour.
This evocative installation captures Swift’s exploration of struggle, resilience, and catharsis, weaving her modern artistry into the timeless fabric of storytelling and emotional transcendence.
The final stop of the trail offers a tender reflection on Taylor Swift’s early years, tracing her journey from a Pennsylvania girl with big dreams to a global music icon.
Childhood photographs and the heartfelt music video for The Best Day, a loving tribute to her mother, illuminate the family bonds that nurtured her budding talent.
This intimate glimpse into her youth reveals the roots of her songwriting and artistry, celebrating a career built on authenticity, creativity, and deep personal connection and a foundation for the extraordinary legacy she continues to craft.
So….what is it about Taylor Swift that continues to capture the world’s heart so deeply?
Perhaps it is because her art transcends music to where it is an invitation to connect, to feel profoundly, and to explore the stories that shape us all. Each album, a new “era,” is not just her evolution but a mirror reflecting who we are as a culture.
At the core of Taylor’s enduring enchantment lies her extraordinary gift for storytelling.
From the innocent blush of first love to the rich, introspective worlds of Folklore and Evermore, she crafts lyrical landscapes where we find pieces of our own souls.
The V&A Songbook Trail brought these tales vividly to life; pairing each era with galleries that echoed its spirit and emotion.
For many, for example, the quiet comfort of the Folklore cardigan came to symbolise resilience in the stillness of the pandemic years.
But Taylor’s magic is not in surface glamour or catchy tunes alone: it is in her power to transform the everyday into something luminous, something extraordinary.
As I wandered through the museum’s halls, the fusion of her music and the V&A’s treasures created a living narrative; where costumes, artefacts, and spaces sang in harmony, inviting us to fall deeper in love with both the artist and the art.
And now, with the electrifying announcement of The Life of a Showgirl, fans around the world awaken to a new chapter, hearts racing and spirits soaring in joyous anticipation.
Overnight, the world is once again captivated by Taylor’s spell; a testament to her timeless ability to sing herself, and all of us, back to life.
Taylor Swift’s artistry is a luminous dance with the very art of enchantment: a spellbinding fusion of music, storytelling, and style that beckons us into worlds both deeply personal and universally resonant.
At its heart, enchantment is to sing, to breathe life anew into the self and to reclaim voice and spirit when silence threatens to hold sway.
As Sharon Blackie so beautifully reminds us, to live an enchanted life is ‘to sing ourselves back to life’, and in this sacred truth, Taylor’s music becomes a living incantation.
Through evocative lyrics and cinematic narratives, she crafts tapestries of emotion that mirror the human soul’s intricate landscape: love and loss, hope and reckoning, vulnerability and fierce empowerment.
The Songbook Trail and her Eras Tour are not merely celebrations of a career; they are enchanted realms where past and present, myth and memory entwine and places where fans gather to weave friendship bracelets and share stories, singing themselves back into wholeness amid life’s trials.
Each era is a chapter in a grand, unfolding spell, a delicate balance of light and shadow, joy and melancholy, that enchants not only because of its artistry but because it holds a mirror to our own dreams and struggles.
It is in this alchemy of authenticity and imagination that Taylor Swift’s legacy takes root, enchanting generations with the timeless magic of storytelling that whispers to the heart’s deepest yearnings and calls us all home.
And now, as the world stirs in breathless anticipation of The Life of a Showgirl, her newest era set to bloom, fans awaken overnight in a joyous frenzy, drawn once more into her spell, eager to follow where her stories lead.
So, again, what is it about Taylor that captivates us so? It is the invitation to journey inward and outward, to feel deeply, to find oneself reflected in the shimmer of her music, and to reclaim one’s own voice in the echo of hers.
And so, dear Enchanted One, if your spirit longs to wander where the mists kiss the ancient waters, where the whispers of Wordsworth and the melodies of the Lake District breathe through every leaf and stone, then I invite you to come, take my hand and journey with me Take Me To The Lakes….
Within this sanctuary of timeless beauty, we will walk the paths once trod by dreamers and poets, where the air hums with the magic of creation and the pulse of history.
And here, beneath the ever-changing sky, we will gather in fellowship and stillness, weaving our own stories into the tapestry of enchantment.
Together, we shall explore the luminous legacies of the Lake District’s enchanted creatives: Wordsworth’s tender reveries, Beatrix Potter’s wonder-filled worlds, Ruskin’s visionary eye, and of course, the modern-day bard Taylor Swift, whose songbook reminds us how to sing ourselves back to life when the weight of the world grows heavy.
This retreat is a sacred pause, a place to lean into the gentle power of nature, to awaken your own creative heart, and to celebrate the artistry of living with reverence and joy. Through quiet reflection, shared stories, and soulful artistry, you will rediscover the music within your own soul and the enchantment that flows from it.
Come, beloved, let the lakes be our muse, their shimmering depths reflecting the infinite beauty and mystery within you. Let us walk this enchanted journey together, and may you leave with your heart fuller, your spirit lighter, and your creative flame burning brighter.
So Take Me To The Lakes: where dreams find their voice, and every soul learns to sing themselves back to life.
With love and enchantment,
Georgie xoxo
